BRICS is the group of leading emerging economies consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The National Statistics Offices of the BRICS produce an annual report to disseminate statistical data about the member countries.
The International Journal on BRICS Statistics (IJBS) is a collaborative initiative developed by representatives of the National Statistical Offices of BRICS countries. The Journal is being implemented under the initial coordination of IBGE, with the objective of establishing an open-access, peer-reviewed platform for the dissemination of methodological, applied, and policy-relevant contributions in official statistics.
The IJBS is focused on, for, and in relation to BRICS countries and their statistical systems. It welcomes contributions from researchers and institutions worldwide, provided that they demonstrate clear relevance to BRICS contexts.
The Journal covers thematic areas including statistical methodologies and frameworks; demographic, social and economic statistics; administrative records and non-traditional data sources; data science and artificial intelligence in official statistics; environmental, climate and geospatial statistics; statistical modernization and digital transformation; and data governance, ethics and quality assurance.
Implementation progress
The core documents guiding the Journal have been developed and consolidated through consultation with the Editorial Board. These include the Editorial Policy, About the Journal, Call for Papers, and Author Guidelines. The editorial management platform has also been implemented through the Open Journal Systems (OJS), and the composition of the Editorial Board is being progressively consolidated with representatives from BRICS countries.
The Journal’s visual identity and logo were developed with the support of IBGE’s communication and design teams.
Inaugural volume
The inaugural volume of the IJBS is planned for publication in January 2027. Given the Journal’s initial stage of implementation, the first volume will be developed primarily through invited contributions coordinated by the Editorial Board. This approach is intended to establish the Journal’s editorial identity, thematic diversity, and institutional visibility.
Invited manuscripts for the inaugural volume will undergo editorial coordination by the Editorial Board. Subsequent regular volumes will follow the Journal’s standard double-blind peer-review process.
